3D finite element analysis of helical gears is presented in this paper. Due to the complicated geometry of gears, the automatic finite element mesh generation from the solid model was the only way for creating the appropriate finite element model. The mesh generation process from the accurate tooth geometry is presented. Analysis was performed for different positions of gear teeth contact, where each position required a new discretisation with finite elements. The results of the analysis are presented showing the influence of the contact load position on the stresses in the gear tooth root. Different stress distributions along the tooth thickness, dependent on position and magnitude of the contact load, are also illustrated.
