Dietetics in dogs and cats with neoplastic disorders

Neoplasias are frequently encountered in dogs and cats. Advanced methods in clinical oncology require supportive dietetic treatment. Loss of lean body mass is detrimental to the host and may be counteracted by adequate energy and protein supply. Because of ii-re particularities of neoplastic tissue (glucose is the main energy source) and the metabolic changes in the host organism (insulin resistency, hyperlactatemia) mono- and disaccharides should not be included in the diet, while fat seems to be a suitable energy source. In future studies it has to be investigated whether n-3 fatty acids, a selective pattern of amino acids or increased supply of antioxidative vitamins are favourable in the dietetic treatment of dogs and cats with neoplastic disorders.
