THE 59th annual conference of the Association for Veterinary Teaching and Research Work (AVTRW) was held in Scarborough in the week before Easter. Topics discussed included ways of attracting more veterinary graduates into research, and the influence of funding bodies on the types of research carried out. There were also topical talks on the threat from emerging and evolving diseases, such as avian influenza and leishmaniosis, and on the importance of establishing a more research-orientated ethos in veterinary practices and hospitals.
