Several classes of drugs are known to cause dyslipidemia. Recognition of these drugs is essential in the evaluation and treatment of patients with dyslipidemia. This article reviews the major classes of drugs that cause dyslipidemia (including antihypertensives, steroid hormones, drugs used in organ transplantation, retinoids, and lipid infusions) and details, when known, the mechanisms for the effects of each class of drugs. Finally, recommendations are given for the management of dyslipidemia following transplantation.
