摘要
These brief comments constitute a long delayed response to Christopher Hook way's 1991 review essay (Semiotica, 1991) devoted to my book on Peirce's Philosophy of Religion (Indiana, 1989). Against the background of considerable agreement, Hookway and I disagree about precisely how to read Peirce's Neglected Argument, about exactly what Peirce is proposing to his readers in that article. I regard Peirce's recommendation of musement as supplying both the rubrics for a certain kind of experiment and as the desciption of a certain type of exercise in reading and rereading.
