Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the accumulation of fat (steatosis) in the liver for reasons other than excess alcohol intake. The diagnosis of NAFLD is becoming more common for a number of reasons, including increased awareness among healthcare providers, improved diagnostic tools, and a greater prevalence of the disorder. This article provides primary care providers with the current understanding of NAFLD, including evidence-based recommendations for managing patients with this common condition.
