摘要
There was no barrier separating the Tethys from Lesser Himalaya and Peninsular India before Himalayan orogeny in Cenozoic. Tethys basin was of the nature of an epicontinental sea up to Carboniferous and the deposition was taking place on an unstable shelf resulting in a number of breaks and facies changes. The deposition in Tethys, Lesser Himalaya and Peninsular India represented proximal and distal parts of the same deposition with transgression not extending in Lesser Himalaya or Peninsular India from time to time. From Permian onwards the Tethys changed from an epicontinental sea to an ocean after the separation of the Lhasa block from India. From Middle Jurassic onwards the Indian ocean opened up and the Peninsular transgressions were from the Indian ocean while in the north the Tethyan transgression was taking place as a result of which there was thick succession from Triassic with some periodic breaks in Jurassic times.
