Everywhere banks are getting fewer and bigger. Last year the industry did a quarter of a trillion dollars' worth of mergers, but few believe it will continue at that pace this year. Given that the industry was hard hit this year by hedge fund losses and emerging markets turmoil, It came through the year in pretty good shape. Barring a global recession, earnings prospects look good again in 1999.
