Transient behavior of vertical buoyancy layer in a stratified fluid

摘要
A straightforward analysis is made of the transient behavior of the buoyancy layer generated by an impulsive step-change of the temperature at the wall. The analysis produced a complete formal solution to the problem. The character of the transient layer shows a strong dependence on the prandtl number. The transitory approach to the steady-state is a non-oscillatory or oscillatory depending on (σ-1)2 > or < 4σ Ra.
