The unique compatibility of degradable Mg alloys with the human body has inspired their investigations as suitable orthopedic implants, but their clinic applications are limited by their high corrosion rates. To improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Mg alloys, Zn-Fe with interlayer phosphate ion-layered double hydroxide (ZnFe-PO43- LDH) film was prepared by hydrothermal treatment. Electrochemical tests and hydrogen evolution tests demonstrated that AZ31 Mg alloy with ZnFe-PO43- LDH film had better corrosion resistance, and that the released interlayer PO43- could combine with Ca2+ to generate Ca-P deposition. The results of cell viability test indicated that the ZnFe-PO43- LDH significantly promoted the proliferation and adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells. ZnFe-PO43- LDH in the present study showed a promising application in improving anticorrosion and biocompatibility of Mg alloys and might act as a platform for a further modification of Mg alloys ascribed to its special layer structure.
