VILLARDOMPARDO (JAEN): FROM THE ROMAN SETTLEMENT TO THE LATE MEDIEVAL CASTLE

On top of a roman settlement located in the current town of Villardompardo (Jaen) a small castle was erected between 13th and 14th centuries. The planning of this building followed the organization of the previous one and re-used part of its structures. But the Roman levels suffered important alterations due to the construction of the castle itself and the constant renovations during the 16th century to transform the castle into a palace. Nevertheless, through the combination of the data obtained in the excavation and the analysis of the archaeology of the architecture, we can establish the chronology of the faces and reconstruct the architectural ensemble in each moment. In this study we focus in the roman and medieval phases.
