Optical bistability of the director in an absorbing nematic liquid crystal

摘要
II has been shown experimentally that an absorbing nematic liquid crystal (NLC) exhibits a bistability when the light wave propagation direction is changed. To obtain the bistability a light intensity two orders of magnitude smaller than the Frederiks transition threshold is sufficient. The angular position of the bistability domain in absorbing NLCs has been found to be different from that observed in transparent ones. A simple model for the bistability in absorbing NLCs has been proposed.
