Having studied geography opens up excellent opportunities in the labour market in France: there are hardly any other countries in Europe in which this field has a similarly excellent status with respect to economy, science and administration as in the 'Grand Nation'. This was achieved by a concentration on practical skills and a high flexibility within a curriculum offering a hierarchy of degrees for studies of different lengths and a course plan to be adhered to rigidly. The self-confidence and the esprit de corps of the geographers in France help to maintain this high status.
