Adsorption of L-alanine monomer, dimer, trimer, tetramer and pentamer by some allophanes

We have determined the adsorption of mono-, di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-L-alanine by three allophanes with different Al/Si ratios: Kanuma (Al/Si=1.4), Kitakami (Al/Si=1.5), and Te Kuiti (Al/Si=1.6). The extent of adsorption was little influenced by the molecular weight of the amino acids. However, for a given alanine species adsorption tended to increase in the order Kanuma<Kitakami<Te Kuiti, that is, as the Al/Si ratio of the allophane increased. The same trend was previously observed for the adsorption of phosphate by allophanes.
