Self-injurious behavior is commonly observed in the population with mental retardation, particularly persons with profound intellectual disability. This review covers the most recent research concerning the phenomenology, pathogenesis, and treatment of self-injurious behavior in mental retardation. Curr Opin Psychiatry 11:523-526.
