Water solubility and diffusion in melts of commercial silicate glasses

Water solubilities and diffusivities have been measured in melts of commercial (float, container, wool, E-glass, TV panel) glasses at temperatures ranging from 900 to 1400 degreesC. The solubility of water in these melts is essentially independent of temperature, with values lying between 1000 and 1200 wtppm for the float, container, wool, and E-glass melts and at approximately 1600 wtppm for the TV panel melts. The diffusivity of water for all melts lies increases with increasing temperature, with values between 5 x 10(-7) and 5 x 10(-5) cm(2)/s for all melts. While an apparent correlation can be made between the diffusivity of water and the viscosity of the melt, this correlation cannot be taken as proof that such a correlation is a general phenomenon.
