Treatment of osteoporosis of elderly women

In the first trial, estriol (2mg/day) was administered to 24 women. The bone mineral density (BMD) L2-4 increased 0.8% and 1.0% after 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively. Serum alkalinephosphatase (ALP), urinary hydroxyproline (Hpr), pyridinoline (Pyr), and deoxypyridinoline (D-Pyr) decreased. in the second trial, calcium chewable tablets containing 1.25g of calcium carbonate and 200IU of vitamin D3 (group D), or only calcium (group C) were administered to 10 and 14 women, respectively. In group D, the BMD L2-4 increased 1.85% and 1.32% after 3 and 6 months of treatment, respectively. Tn group C, the BMD L2-4 increased 2.5% after 3 months of treatment but decreased 0.4% after 6 months of treatment. These therapies were considered to be useful in the treatment of osteoporosis of elderly women.
