This research could be taken as a reference to improve the quality of skill instruction. Several methods were utilised, such as document analysis and questionnaire survey. The affecting factors included instructional quality, family background, prerequisite achievement and learning motivation. After conducting the research, the following conclusions were obtained: the home social economic status of mechanics students in vocational high schools was mainly of the middle and low levels; most parents of the mechanics students in vocational high schools paid great attention to their children's educational conditions; the prerequisite achievement and motivation to learn were mainly affected by instructional quality; and prerequisite achievement took a great part in the skill development achievement of the mechanics students in vocational high schools. Furthermore, the important paths of skill development for mechanics students of vocational high schools involved instructional quality and the parents' educational attitude.
