(Figure Presented) Layering up: The single-molecule magnets (SMMs) [Mn 12O12(O2CR)16(H2O) 4] have been shown to exhibit liquid-crystalline phases. The mesophases can be smectic or cubic depending on the surface functionality imparted by the R group. A local squarelike arrangement of the cluster cores is observed within the smectic layers. This result is a first step towards the self-assembly of SMMs on surfaces by a bottom-up approach. © 2008 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.
