Strategies for screening for coeliac disease

Research during the last two decades has indicated coeliac disease to be underdiagnosed. The question remains whether in primary health care "case finding by screening" strategy should be used in the diagnostic work-up or whether also population-based screening programmes are justified. This review will give an example of both types of screening strategies and compare the obtained prevalence results. Focus here is on the serological screening tools and the human leukocyte antigens (HLA) DQ2 and DQ8.
