The high-spin compounds [(Mn(2,2'-Bipy)(i-Bu2PS2)(2)] (1) and [Mn(Phen)(i-Bu2PS2)(2)] (11) with mu(eff) = 5.90 (I) and 5.92 (II) mu(B) have been synthesized. The structure of complex I has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic: a = 14.723(3) Angstrom, b = 20.940(3) Angstrom, c = 11.385(2) Angstrom, beta = 105.61(1)degrees, V = 3380(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, rho(calcd) = 1.237 g/cm(3), space group P2(1)/c. Complex I has a molecular mononuclear structure. The Mn coordination polyhedron is a distorted octahedron, MnN2S4. The 2,2'-Bipy molecules of two neighboring complexes are involved in a pi-pi interaction giving rise to dimeric molecular ensembles. The mass spectra of complexes I and II show molecular ions for the Mn(i-Bu2PS2)(2) chelate and for heterocycles. The [MnS](+) ion is formed amoncy the fragmentation products of the [Mn(i-Bu2PS2)(2)](+) molecular ion. Thermodynamic parameters for vaporization of Mn(i-Bu2PS2)(2) have been determined.
