Role of probiotics in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

The role of probiotics in the treatment of various diseases is nowadays one of most investigated topics in medicine. The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence on efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Knowing the immunological effect of probiotics, there is a rational reason for their use in IBD treatment, however, their beneficial role is confirmed only in the treatment of pouchitis. Results concerning ulcerative colitis and, especially Crohn's Disease are not so consistent. Although there are a rising number of studies trying to identify the true role of probiotics in IBD, well-designed, randomized, controlled trials are needed.
