A simulation study of a liquid crystal optical switch based on total internal reflection

摘要
We conducted a simulation study on total internal reflection in liquid crystal cells by using the Berreman 4 x 4 method and investigated the effects of liquid crystal director configurations. We analysed a liquid crystal optical switch based on total internal reflection and found that the surface anchoring of the liquid crystal cell has profound effects on the performance of the switch. Our simulation showed that high contrast ratios can be obtained with weak anchoring strengths.
