摘要：

The vegetation cover in the north-eastern region of Norway is severely affected by pollution from the Russian nickel smelters in Nikel and Zapolyarnij. NORUT TT has applied satellite remote sensing to document the changes to the vegetation cover, Landsat TM and MSS images obtained from 1973 to 1994 were analysed and vegetation cover maps and change detection maps were produced, One of the main changes observed was that the area with lichen heaths and forests decreased from c. 37% of the investigated area in 1973 to c. 10% in 1992. Analysis of Landsat TM images obtained after 1988 reveals that the situation is now stabilised, consistent with a decrease in SO2 emissions.
