摘要
Scanning electron microscope observation of the fracture surfaces of millimeter wave sintered alumina was carried out. The millimeter wave sintering produced a high-strength and high-hardness materials. Alumina bodies sintered by a 30 and 83 GHz millimeter wave showed fine grains of a few microns though the conventionally sintered body has rather grown grains. The density of conventionally sintered body and the millimeter wave sintered bodies are almost same. The bending strength of the conventionally sintered was 400 GPa whereas the millimeter wave sintered bodies were 600 GPa. The Vickers hardness of millimeter wave was about 1800 in contrast, the conventionally sintered alumina was less than 1500.
