The source of far infrared radiation in spiral galaxies

We studied eight nearby, nearly face-on spiral galaxies in the Br gamma (lambda = 2.165 mum) and far infrared (FIR, lambda = 40 - 120 mum) regimes to determine the dominant heating source. We used Br gamma rather than H alpha as a tracer of star formation, several hydrogen recombination lines to assess the extinction of the regions analyzed, STARBURST99 software to model stellar populations to test for dominant heating source, and different extinction laws for different stellar populations. Our results indicate that FIR radiation is a good indicator of star formation.
