We explain the basic principle of the O - C method applied when discussing periodic phenomena. The method is illustrated using observational data of a short-period pulsating variable (BW Vulpeculae, P = 0.020104d), a long-period pulsator (chi Cygni, P = 406 d), a cataclysmic variable (EX Hydrae, P = 0.06823 days) and a LBV (AG Car, cycle length 371 days). We illustrate difficulties in the application of the technique, and address misunderstandings in the interpretation of the O - C diagram.
