Polymerization of cyclic acetals by a free radical initiator, perfluorodibenzoyl peroxide, in the presence of oxygen

摘要
Ring-opening polymerization of cyclic acetals using cationic initiators was investigated. It was found that 1,3-dioxolane, 1,3-dioxolane, 1,3-dioxepane, and 1,3,5-trioxane were polymerized slowly but smoothly by a free radical initiator, perfluorodibenzoyl peroxide (FBPO), in the presence of oxygen. The polymerization rate was found to depend on the amount of oxygen present. The effects of the molar ratio of FBPO to oxygen and the temperature on the conversion of 1,3-dioxolane and molecular weight were also studied.
