Distribution of strain ductility in hot-rolled steel shapes

Experimental data from 20 steel uniaxial tensile coupons are evaluated to determine the variation in strain ductility for different regions of the cross-section. Three areas of interest were explored: the flange, the web and the k-line region. Yield stress for a single beam was seen to vary by 95 MPa from one coupon to another. Likewise, ductility at ultimate strength varied by a factor near two. Conclusions were that the assumption of homogeneity of a steel shape may be unconservative.
