Creating a home for the spirit of learning: Contributions of student development educators

In this article we clarify the common educational role of student affairs and academic affairs in student learning by showing that (a) student development has been central to the philosophy of higher education from the first colonial colleges, (b) student affairs programs promote student learning, (c) student development educators are teachers, and (d) research results verify the contributions of student development educators. Additional ways student development educators can fulfill this mission are suggested.
