An efficient synthesis of gamma-aryl or alkyl substituted beta-amino acids starting from N-Cbz-L-homoserine lactone via the formation of alpha-amino aryl, alkenyl or alkynyl ketones with the original alpha-carbon chirality retained as such is described. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
