摘要
The Industria Latinoamericana de Automedicacion Responsable (Latin American Self-Medication Industry) sponsored a regional study aimed at analyzing responsible self-medication and the ability of consumers to use nonprescription products safely. The study was conducted in eight Latin American countries and included interviews with 5251 customers. The results showed that Latin American consumers perceive nonprescription products as safe and less risky than prescription medicines and they consider them as effective as the latter for certain conditions. Consumers are cautious when using nonprescription products, as they read labels and are interested in getting information about their efficacy, side effects, and contraindications. Consumers have a positive attitude toward taking care of their health. A comparison between the results of this pioneer study and the results of similar studies conducted in the United States and six European countries demonstrates that Latin American consumers are as conscientious as their counterparts in those countries, demonstrating correct attitudes toward and practices in the use of nonprescription products.
