摘要
The Gaia mission is designed to explore the Galaxy, measuring the phase space parameters of I billion stars and providing a description of their astrophysical parameters by combining the astrometric instrument with a photometric system and a radial velocity spectrometer. In spite of the fact that due to the crowding of the stars on the focal plane, the densest regions of the inner Galaxy will be poorly sampled, still a significant numbers of regions will be observed allowing the study of the thin disc and of the bulge. This paper details the tremendous impact that Gaia will have on our understanding of the thin disc and bulge formation and evolution. Finally, simulations of the inner Galaxy in the photometric system of Gaia are presented and discussed.
