During the summer of 1998; Maxwell was principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site at the University of North Dakota Department of Computer Science. Under the supervision of Maxwell and Sven Anderson; seven undergraduates designed; built; and programmed the robot nicknamed Rusty for the AAAI event. The team placed first. 摘要：
An overview is given on two undergraduate group projects conducted, one from 1998 at the University of North Dakota and one from 1999 at Swarthmore. Experiences from these projects led to the development of a new robotics course at Swarthmore. The course focused on a set of fundamental concepts in mobile robotics that would prepare students for research projects in this area.
