(M = H+, Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+; 0 < x < 4; 2.96 < y < 3.40; n less than or equal to 6.30), a method is proposed to control structural transformations of manganese(III, IV) oxides by introducing M+ or M2+ modifier ions. Depending on the size of the ion and its ability to retain surrounding water molecules, different structures can be obtained upon heat treatment: psilomelane, cryptomelane, pyrolusite, and spinel.
