The ATLAS pixel detector is the innermost tracking detector of the ATLAS experiment With an active surface of 1.7 m(2) and 80 million readout channels it has a complexity unprecedented in a HEP tracker. After a 10 years planning and construction phase, the ATLAS pixel detector is nearing its completion and is scheduled to be integrated into the ATLAS detector to take data with the first LHC collisions in 2008. The paper gives an overview of the pixel detector and the current status.
