The synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites by melt intercalation, suspension and emulsion polymerization was described. The MMT was modified and then used to synthesize nanocomposites with MMA by emulsion polymerization. The thermal stability of PMMA was improved due to nanocompounding with MMT. The results indicates that the exfoliated nanocomposites could be obtained by all four kinds of MMT.
