CARABAS measurements from the boreal forest in Tuusula, Finland are presented. They show a good sensitivity to the forest stem volume, with no saturation reached up to stem volumes of 550 m(3)/ha. An indication of stem volume retrieval accuracy suggests that for high stem volumes CARABAS measurements approach the accuracy of standard ground-based inventory. A simple model for the VHF backscatter is described, and used to explain in a qualitative manner some of the measurements that degrade a simple regression of sigma degrees on backscatter. This is particularly noticeable for areas with few, very large trees.
