摘要
Phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins are used to manufacture a variety of engineered wood products (EWP) including plywood, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), and oriented strandboard. A broad overview of resin production and end use is provided. The manufacture of PF is described in terms of the chemical reactions and mechanisms that transform the monomers to finished resins. Some aspects of PF formulation are discussed, including cure accelerators and performance modifiers for various applications. Discussion of cure mechanisms and conditions is also provided in light of the fundamental system chemistry. Some capabilities of the PF polymer apart from the wood substrate are highlighted to provide perspective on EWP performance issues.
