Support for and satisfaction with democracy

In a society under transformation it is an open question whether people would prefer a democratic or an undemocratic regime. Breakdown of old regimes forces political elites to design new political institutions. New regimes can only become an established democracy if its institutions are supported by a large majority of the populace. (Rose, 1994).
