摘要
Disc brake is one of the essential components in any automobile as it is used to turn down the speed of the automobile. During braking operation, the braking pads and discs are undergoing severe conditions of wear and high temperature. In this manuscript, two stage modification is carried out on the existing braking of vented disk brakes and analysis is carried out using simulation- based software Ansys to improve the life span and stress characteristics. In the modification mainly hole diameter of the disc and contact area between brake pad and disc are varied by keeping in view the total weight of the braking system. The modified designs with larger hole diameter were found to be better in stress characteristics as the maximum stress reduced 18.9% and has also shown significant improvement in minimum life span of the braking system. Undoubtedly, with increase in hole diameter the heat dissipation will be better as more heat can flow easily through the larger holes. Further modifications can be carried out on geometric dimensions and material characteristics for improvement in the performance of the braking system. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
