Hypopharyngeal defects represent a challenging problem for the reconstructive surgeon. This article discusses an approach to the management of these problems. Specifically, the main methods of hypopharyngeal reconstruction including free tissue transfer and pedicle flap techniques, typical complications, and expected results are reviewed. An algorithm discussing our approach to these problems is presented.
