In the pathological progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) the deposition of amyloid plaques is mainly due to the aggregation of a peptide, termed Amyloid beta peptide (A beta). Our previous studies(1) suggest that beside this pathological attribute of amyloidogenic APP processing, a physiological function of A beta in regulating sphingolipid homeostasis exists. Here we present a technical approach based on measuring enzyme activity and mass spectrometry profiles to identify possible mechanisms in (glyco-)sphingolipid metabolism linked with AD.
