On the Possibility of Using a Metamaterial to Increase the Power of Multibeam Klystrons

The paper considers the use of a metamaterial consisting of an array of metal inductive inserts in the gap of the cavity of a multibeam klystron to significantly increase the area of the interaction region. Using analytical estimates and numerical simulation, it is shown that inserts can provide an increase in the phase velocity of the wave in the gap and, consequently, an increase in the uniformity of the field acting on the beams. This makes it possible to increase the number of beams, and, accordingly, the power of the klystron, without increasing the accelerating voltage. Cavities for S- and K-a-band klystrons have been studied.
