A Novel Coverage-Preserving Clustering Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

Sensing coverage is one of the crucial characteristics for wireless sensor networks. It has to be considered in the design of routing protocols. LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Cluster Hierarchy) is a significant and representative routing protocol which organizes the sensing nodes by clustering. For LEACH, residual energy should be considered in order to overcome the inequality of energy dissipation rate. Considering the impact on these two factors of a network, we have proposed a coverage-preserving energy-based clustering algorithm (CEC), which is an improved LEACH. Through improving the threshold for cluster-head selection, CEC achieved more effective results than the other baseline protocols. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier B. V.
