This paper presents an analysis of the development trends in recent years of the working principles of uncooled arrays of IR thermal detectors and processes for fabricating them. Modem concepts concerning the theoretical limiting parameters of these arrays and existing practical limitations are discussed. Most of the attention is paid to microbolometric arrays. New types of uncooled thermal arrays are also described, and innovations in-thermal viewers based on uncooled arrays are briefly characterized. (C) 2002 Optical Society of America.
