Etymological notes on the Etymological Dictionary of the Old Church Slavonic Language

In the paper, the possibility of other etymological solutions for some difficult words from ESJS is discussed. First, our attention is focused on OCS . for which the connection with verb is substantiated, and on this basis, several Russian and Bulgarian words (e.g., Russ. 'sensitive, susceptible to disease', Bulg. 'terrible, ugly') are also included into the nest. Second, an attempt is made to identify the semantic origin of the etymological nest containing OCS 'blindness' and Slay. *xlednoti/*xlodniti. It is assumed that the meanings attested in individual languages (e.g. 'to weaken', 'falling, pouring (precipitation)') developed from the original meaning 'slow move'. A connection with words belonging to the root *skled- /*sklod- (Czech dial. odskloudnouti 'to deprive of affection, love, change', 'to leave, to be wrong', Russ. dial. 'to depart, to separate, drain' etc.) is proposed. Third, etymology of OCS 'to make lame' is discussed in the context of an onomatopoeic root *kles-/*klos-/*klas-/*kl'as- (Czech klesati 'to fall, to stumble', S.-Cr. ce 'to move quickly, without stopping', 'to run').
