EDGE terminal with interference cancellation and spatial diversity processing

This paper describes the expected link level performance for a practical implementation of an EDGE terminal with two antennas and two RF receive paths.. Performance is shown in terms of BLock Error Rate (BLER) for both noise and interference limited conditions assuming an envelope correlation value between antennas of 0.5, and a path mismatch of 2.0 dB. For noise-limited conditions a Maximal Ratio Combiner (MRC) is employed to achieve spatial diversity gains, while for interference limited conditions a Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) type of combiner is employed to achieve interference cancellation gains. Performance is compared with a conventional EDGE receiver for a number of propagation channels and conditions. The expected gains in noise-limited conditions range from 0.8 to 3.4 dB for the GMSK modes, and 1.3 to 2.6 dB for the 8-PSK modes. The gains for a single co-channel interferer range from 15.4 to 20.6 dB for the GMSK modes and approximately 0 to 13.4 dB for the 8-PSK modes.
