The paper concentrates on some design aspects of a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system. In the analysis we concentrate on the cooling mode operation unless otherwise stated. The emphasis is put on the entropy generation analysis of a Ground Heat Exchanger (GHE) and its practical consequences. Using second law analysis an optimum pipe diameter can be defined as a function of circulating fluid flow rate. Further the heat pump operation is studied from the entropy generation point of view and a power input characteristic has been derived as a function of condensing temperature. Finally the total cost of a GHSP system over a specified period of time has been evaluated as a function of some design parameters.
