We have fabricated a double-layered tape composed of a metal thin film underlayer and a metal particulate (MP) upper layer. Two kinds of metal thin films-Cu nonmagnetic and Co magnetic-were deposited under the MP layer by metal evaporation (ME). We found that the magnetic underlayer affected the magnetic recording properties of the tape in high-density recording. Co magnetic underlayer tape output was significantly enhanced compared to Cu nonmagnetic underlayer tape output, especially at shorter recording wavelengths. It is possible to enhance output by introducing another high-density recording layer under thr main magnetic layer. We consider that the internal magnetization of the magnetic underlayer assists the upper layer recording under this condition, providing a new way to improve the recording density of MP media.
